Alabama Cotton Field Day set Aug.4

The Alabama Cotton Field Day is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at the Tennessee Valley Research and Extension Center (TVREC) in Belle Mina, Ala.

Southeast Farm Press is a sponsor of the field day, along with the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, and the John Deere Company.

The program begins on Thursday, Aug. 4, with registration at 7:30 a.m. A welcome will follow from Chet Norris, superintendent of the TVREC. Tours will depart at 8:15, 9:30 and 10:45, under the direction of David Harkins, agricultural program associate at the TVREC, and Brad Durham, agricultural program assistant at the TVREC.

The tours and presentations will be as follows:

Tour 1: Cotton Weed Control, Mike Patterson, Alabama Cooperative Extension weed scientist; Cotton Insect Control, Barry Freeman and Ron Smith, Alabama Cooperative Extension entomologists; Cotton Drip Irrigation, Mark Dougherty, assistant professor, biosystems engineering, and Larry Curtis, Alabama Cooperative Extension agricultural engineer; and Cotton Disease and Nematode Control, Kathy Lawrence, associate professor, entomology and plant pathology.

Tour 2: Monsanto Flex Cotton Varieties, Charlie Burmester, Alabama Cooperative Extension agronomist and Kathy Glass, agricultural program associate, agronomy and soils; Cover Crop Management for Weed Suppression, Andrew Price, USDA-ARS-NSDL weed scientist; Cover Crop Desiccation Practices, Jarrod Jones, USDA-ARS-NSDL research technician; and Narrow-Row Cotton Production (15-inch), Andy Pace, crop systems specialist, John Deere.

Tour 3: Variable Rate Seeding, John Fulton, assistant professor, biosystems engineering; Variable Rate Nitrogen, Shannon Norwood, Alabama Cooperative Extension agent and Joey Shaw, associate professor, agronomy and soils; Variable Rate Spraying, Andy Pace; Yield Mapping, Andy Pace; and Cotton Fertility, Charles Mitchell, Alabama Cooperative Extension agronomist.

A sponsored lunch prepared by John Curtis and the Limestone Farmer's Cooperative will be served at 11:30. Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station Director Jim Bannon will speak at 1:15 p.m. followed by John Deere demonstrations at 1:30 p.m. The demonstrations will include Autotrack tractors, variable rate spraying, and a narrow-row cotton harvester.
