Tennessee beef, forage field day scheduled June 14

Cattle management, hay production and storage will be on the minds of cattle producers attending the 2007 Tennessee Beef and Forage Field Day.

The event is being held on June 14 by the University of Tennessee at the Blount Unit of the East Tennessee Research and Education Center.

Activities will begin with a trade show at 7:30 a.m.

Following keynote presentations by Joseph A. DiPietro, UT vice-president for agriculture, and Ken Givens, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, participants will assemble into groups to attend morning sessions that address how to select a commercial squeeze chute for cattle management, hay barn plans and planning, and profitable hay production.

Time will be available for all participants to attend each session as well as to visit trade exhibits.

For the first time ever, a youth program will be presented. The two-session format will feature a beef cattle judging clinic as well as presentations on opportunities available to youth interested in careers related to agriculture and natural resources. Proper preparation for college will be discussed.

Lunch will be served at noon, and an afternoon session on the impact of health and temperament on feedlot performance and carcass quality will be presented by Darrell Busby of Iowa State University.

Emmit Rawls, a beef marketing specialist with UT Extension, will also present a session on the Tennessee Beef Evaluation Program.

Pre-registrations are encouraged by June 8. Contact your local county UT Extension office or call the East Tennessee Research and Education Center at (865) 974-7201.
