‘The Peanut Program in the farm bill is working’

State peanut group executives say program has saved farms during price slump.

Peanut and rice producers and their farm organizations expended a lot of energy to get Price Loss Coverage included in the 2014 farm bill when Midwest corn and soybean growers wanted an insurance-based program.

The former finally prevailed with the help of Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., and other southern senators and House members who realized crop insurance has not been that helpful to farmers in the South.

How has PLC worked for peanut farmers? This video contains comments from the directors of four of the state peanut grower organizations who participated in a discussion at the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation annual meeting.

The execs also talked about the misplaced criticism of large, family farms as corporate farms by organizations such as the Environmental Working Group, the Washington-based activist group that has gained notoriety by posting financial information about growers on its website.
