Organic vegetables, fruit to be topic

Vegetable and fruit growers will have an opportunity to get the latest information on organic techniques for managing pests and disease at a workshop at the Tift County Agriculture Center in Tifton, Ga, on Nov. 20.

The workshop will feature presentations by successful organic farmers as well as research and Extension experts, hands-on identification exercises, and the opportunity to share real-world experiences with other growers, including conventional and organic farmers and Master Gardeners.

Rose Koenig, plant pathologist and owner of Rosie's Farm in Gainsville, Fla., will give an on-farm perspective of how to grow vegetables and fruits organically without financially significant damage from the many diseases and insects common to the Southeast.

Following a catered lunch featuring locally grown organic vegetables, participants will learn how to identify specific pests and diseases and select the most effective organic methods to combat them.

John Ruberson, of the University of Geogia's Coastal Plains Experiment Station will provide a guide to insect identification and discuss the use of beneficial insects to protect crops from damage by “bad bugs.”

The workshop is sponsored by Georgia Organics, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable and organic growing practices, through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency's Strategic Agriculture Initiative.
