Base acres becoming the hot potato of the new farm bill

Southern Peanut Farmers, other farm groups face dilemma on base acres.

Whether to update acreage bases and what to do with generic base have become some of the hottest issues in the new farm bill which is due to be written to replace the Agricultural Act of 2014 in 2018.

The peanut industry isn’t exempt because not all of the current peanut farmers have acreage bases equal to what they’ve been planting, and the issue has caused some divisiveness within grower organizations.

Executive directors of the state peanut associations discussed the issue during a roundtable discussion at the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation annual conference which was held recently in Sandestin, Fla.
